One of the hardest things you can do is find the perfect pair of jeans. There is no denying it. If you do things right, your life takes off quickly; if you’re wrong, your life crumbles in front of the mirror.

In fact, jeans are an absolute must in every wardrobe. Whether it’s a cosmopolitan city or a city center, global denim dominates all of its counterparts in quite a palpable way. Although denim fashions come and go (hello, baggy silhouettes), jeans are still there to match your blazer, sweater or white t-shirt and carry you from the workplace to the coffee shop to your leisurely stroll in the blink of an eye.

But, whether your favorite pair of jeans is a high-waisted slouch or a slim pair in a dark hue, there are a plethora of jeans styles in 2022 that could inspire you to step out in a new style every time, but in denim. This year’s hottest looks will take you on a new saga of denim styles you’ll want to follow and flaunt, irresistibly.

Cold colours

It’s worth mentioning that the multicolored jeans trend is wide-ranging, implying that extreme brightness or quirkiness isn’t necessary. For those who prefer simple colors, the color can take the form, or shade in this case, of any unconventional blue color, such as brown denim pants or a

buttery pale pair. You can also take inspiration from nature by wearing jeans with a felted look of a sunrise or a verdant forest.

Flared jeans

This wide leg silhouette keeps you warm in the winter while allowing you to breathe in the summer. To balance out the extended hemline, complement the wide-leg pants with a crop top, halter top, or v-neck tee.

Dark washes

Dark indigo denim is making an appearance again in summer 2022, following the popularity of stonewashed washes of the 1990s. Dark, sleek washes have been seen on the catwalks of Saint Laurent and Christian Dior, proving they are the sharpest step to making denim instantly professional.

Small size

The optimistic low-rise jeans trend is still strong after spring. Due to catwalk debuts at Versace and Missoni, low-rise jeans also got the designer name stamp of approval. Wear this look with a deep neck satin blouse or a turtleneck top!

Long denim skirts

The long denim skirt makes the next entry. Yes, the retro look is very popular right now, and no, it’s not terrifying. In fact, it’s sleek, cool, and ready to be adopted. This skirt can be worn simply with sneakers, but due to its large slit and length, it can be dressed up with a mule and to enhance the grace you can also adorn yourself with minimalist jewelry sets.

These are the few denim silhouettes rocking the runway this season and so should you.

A birthday dress is a big deal. Your birthday presents an annual opportunity to fulfill your fashion fantasies and find a look that perfectly captures the personality. If you’re throwing a party for your family and friends, you might feel more inclined to shop. But let’s be honest: dressing up for a solo birthday date is just as worthy of a head-turning look. Take the opportunity by exploring this season’s fashion trends and fusing them with your personal style to find a birthday dress that looks just like you. Get inspired by celebs who recently celebrated their birthdays, like Olivia Rodrigo, who leaned into the Y2K fashion aesthetic with a pink lace skirt ensemble and cowboy hat. Or take a cue from Tommy Dorfman, who endorsed the nude dress trend on his 30th birthday in a sheer, sparkly mini dress. Another option? Go the Suni Lee way and go for a classic little black dress with a plunging neckline, or try the Millie Bobby Brown way and dazzle in a purple sequin dress.

Otherwise, look at the birthday dresses you’ve worn in the past and note the patterns. Do you have a white birthday dress tradition and want to stick to a color theme? Or are you attracted to a particular silhouette? Maybe you love edgy minis with cutouts or romantic corseted maxis with subtle detailing? Read on for a helpful guide that will simplify your search for a birthday dress.

How to choose the right birthday dress

Narrowing down the list of potential birthday dresses is a challenge. There are countless silhouettes, patterns, colors and shapes, all of which can easily be overwhelmed. But once you find the right one, something will just click. You’ll feel confident and excited to celebrate your next chapter. Make a list of the details that are most important to you (fit, comfort, design, etc.) and keep your budget in mind.

How to style your birthday dress

Base your accessories on your dress to keep it the focal point of your birthday look. An off-the-shoulder silhouette lends itself to a choker or chunky chain necklace, while a pendant might be the best way to enhance a plunging neckline. When it comes to footwear, consider clothing style and your comfort needs. Heels, of course, enhance the attire. But if the birthday dress you choose ends up skimming the floor, shoes won’t necessarily matter as much, so your favorite flats, sandals, or sneakers will work just fine. How ‘Julia’ Costume Designer Created The Show’s Vibrant Wardrobe https://designsbyjanie.com/how-julia-costume-designer-created-the-shows-vibrant-wardrobe/ Wed, 15 Jun 2022 21:27:07 +0000 https://designsbyjanie.com/how-julia-costume-designer-created-the-shows-vibrant-wardrobe/ Julia Child has been a part of John Dunn’s life for as long as he can remember. Julia Child has been a part of John Dunn’s life for as long as he can remember. As a child, he watched his public television cooking show, “The French Chef,” so often that it came to mean much more to him than just someone smiling encouragingly at him from the small screen. “She was one of those people who (had such an impact on me) — kind of like the idea of ducklings’ footprints on their mother, where you’re at an impressionable age when you look at something,” he tells TheWrap. “She was a very iconic person in my upbringing and in my DNA, almost, growing up in America at a certain age.”

So finding yourself years later designing the costumes for “Julia,” the HBO Max series about the chef who brought French cuisine to the American masses, seemed almost fatal. “It was awesome, great fun to get in and dive deep into researching this person who I thought I knew as a TV personality, but really didn’t know anything about his private life and his story,” said Dunn said. “So it turned out to be a wonderful trip.”

“Julia” tells the story of Child’s rise to culinary stardom, delving into the development of “The French Chef” for Boston public broadcaster WBGH in the early 1960s and exploring how fame changed her life. For Dunn, creating the wardrobe for this version of Child, played by English actress Sarah Lancashire, required understanding who the woman behind the apron really was.

Are ‘The Great’ and ‘Julia’ too good for Emmy? Hope not

“His whole life, growing up in California and even his family history, which started in the East and then, with a very pioneering spirit, was part of the movement out West,” he said. “And his family built a great industry and wealth wherever they went, actually. And they ended up in wonderful Pasadena, where she grew up in luxury and didn’t have to cook because there was someone cooking for her family.

In addition to numerous written sources, Dunn also drew on Child’s extensive photo collection, including those taken by her husband, Paul Child (played by David Hyde Pierce in “Julia”). “One of his professions, actually, was a photographer, and he loved taking personal photos,” said Dunn, whose work on “Boardwalk Empire” earned him five of his six Emmy nominations. (The sixth was for ‘Mad Men.’) “In the years they first got married, he documented a lot of her look, her style. And then, of course, once she became known, more and more photographs of its surface that we were able to deepen and on which to base our work.

Here, Dunn walks us through what some of the key “Julia” characters look like.

Sarah Lancashire in “Julia” (HBO Max)

Julia ChildSarah Lancashire

“I really wanted to define each of the characters and give them each a personal style because they’re all very individual and idiosyncratic and most of them are older and have lived full lives,” Dunn said. “The clothes had to reflect the journeys these people had taken.”

For Julia, he continued, “I have a few key notes that I was trying to hit. One of them was the fact that she had a very developed sense of taste and flavor and putting things together. And I wanted her clothes to reflect this interesting mix of patterns and colors, away from bland American cuisine, which was reflected in her wardrobe where she made interesting choices. I thought it was a reflection of his style of cooking and his desire to bring a sense of sophistication to the American palette.

With that in mind, Dunn mixed patterns, much like Child herself did, and created a series of striking looks, many tailor-made for Lancashire, like her green and yellow blouse (above) and its bright orange and red ensemble (below). ).

Sarah Lancashire in

Sarah Lancashire in “Julia” (HBO Max)

“I also wanted to reflect that she came across as an extremely confident person. Part of that was that she was very tall, probably six-foot-two, and had always stood out since she was a teenager. So she had used to be someone who stood out and I think she took that ball and ran with it. She reflected that in her wardrobe: she had a love of color. She loved patterns and loved put them together in an interesting way, which was also key to presenting her to the world and how people were drawn to her.

Dunn avoided making direct replicas of what Julia wore in real life, preferring instead to capture her overall spirit. “I always think it’s really important, instead of making a carbon copy of what that person was known for, even if they were very well known, you should always modify it a bit and it should be personalized for the actor particular one who’s playing the part,” he said. “It helps the actor a lot because then he doesn’t feel like he’s trapped in the asp, to use a cooking term, and can inhabit the character more comfortably.”

The one exception to this approach was the uniform Child wore on “The French Chef,” a blue smock emblazoned with the “Ecole des 3 Gourmandes” patch, a tribute to the informal cooking school Child ran in Paris in the 1980s. 1950 with Simone Beck. and Louisette Bertholle, her co-authors of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.“I thought it was important because people would be very familiar with it,” Dunn said.

David Hyde Pierce and Bebe Neuwirth in

David Hyde Pierce and Bebe Neuwirth in “Julia” (HBO Max)

Reviews DeVoto (Bebe Neuwirth)

Julia’s best friend on the show is an extremely sophisticated woman of letters who recently lost her husband. Thus, her wardrobe in sober colors reflects this period of mourning, while remaining perfectly chic. “That’s how you would have perceived her in real life because she had a full and cultured life in New York, her and her husband,” Dunn said. “And when he passed away, she was right up there in Cambridge, (Massachusetts), and away from that life, but (her style) didn’t go away. That elegance was part of who Avis was.

Dunn sourced the majority of Neuwirth’s costumes from vintage designers online. “Bebe wears vintage clothes so well,” he said. “Vintage clothing can be a tough challenge as it’s hard to find the right sizes. But we knew how to dress Bebe with a lot of designer vintage.

Adriane Lenox and Brittany Bradford in

Adriane Lenox and Brittany Bradford in “Julia” (HBO Max)

Alice NamanBrittany Bradford

The series features three impressive women who work in competitive, male-dominated workplaces. Brittany Bradford’s Alice Naman is an ambitious young WGBH producer who is the first to see Child’s potential and is instrumental in launching her show. As a young black woman in a 1960s company, Alice must prove herself over and over again, only to see her male colleagues take credit for her work. Her wardrobe at work is professional — think cute, soft cardigans and pencil skirts — and more conservative than the fun, vibrant designs we see her wearing at home (above). Although the character is fictional, she is key to the story.

Judith Light as Blanche Knopf and Fiona Glascott as Judith Jones in

Judith Light as Blanche Knopf and Fiona Glascott as Judith Jones in “Julia” (HBO Max)

Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott) and Blanche Knopf (Judith Light)

Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott) was the legendary publisher who rescued “The Diary of Anne Frank” from a pile of discarded manuscripts. In the series, she works with Blanche Knopf in her eponymous publishing house, where she publishes, among other things, a novel by John Updike and the second cookbook by Julia Child. She is a strong supporter of Child as she develops her television program. Like Avis, Judith and Blanche are at the pinnacle of sophistication, but their wardrobe has a harder, more formal edge, reflecting the corporate setting where high-ranking women were still anomalies.

“Judith Jones was a very, very famous editor. She was a powerhouse in what was truly a man’s world,” Dunn said. “She was mentored, of course, by Blanche Knopf, who was kind of molding her into a next-generation editor who had to prepare to be in this rather hostile environment of New York and the industry. of editing. Judith Light as Blanche, we have a lot of resources in Los Angeles of vintage couture that she wears for her office scenes, all the gorgeous costumes that she wears.

“I got really deep into the known thought processes and what these people had to go through on each of their journeys,” Dunn continued. “They were such a diverse group of people that Julia had around her that it was fun because there was nothing cookie-cutter about it.”

Which teacup and saucer is the best?

Tea is more than just a beverage; It’s a way of life. For those who are serious about their tea drinking, a teacup and saucer set is a worthwhile investment. It can give the daily task a bit more ritual, while also being a must-have for anyone planning to host a tea party. The Wedgwood Hibiscus Cup and Saucer is a high quality tea set with a striking pattern, making it a perfect choice for those who want to inject a little more elegance into their cup of tea.

What to know before buying a teacup and saucer

Shapes

Although there are many similarities, tea mugs have key differences from coffee mugs. Most notably, the shape – most western-style tea cups have slanted sides, making them easy to drink from, but they don’t retain heat as well. Asian-style tea cups are usually (but not always) handleless and often have straight sides like a coffee cup.

Materials

Clay

Clay cups, until glazed, have a porous surface that can retain the taste of tea. Enamel cups are easier to clean. Most clay cups aren’t dishwasher safe and aren’t the most durable.

Porcelain

Porcelain mugs are made from clay fired at a higher temperature to create a more durable material that retains heat more effectively.

China

Porcelain is fired at a lower temperature than porcelain, creating a material that is less durable, thinner, and has a beautiful luster. Bone china is porcelain mixed with animal bone ash in varying percentages and then fired twice for a stronger, harder cup with a slightly translucent appearance.

Glass

Glass is eco-friendly and minimalist chic, but not the most durable. Most glass tea cups are dishwasher safe and made from shatterproof glass.

Wood

The wood is hard to break, beautiful and environmentally friendly. It is also a porous material and will not last as long as many other options.

Metal

Metal is the most durable material for tea cups – unbreakable, affordable and dishwasher safe. But depending on the metal, it can leave a metallic taste in the liquids it contains.

What to Look for in a Quality Teacup and Saucer

Sustainability

Some materials, as detailed above, are more durable than others. If you’re rather clumsy or regularly have children or other people using your teacups, a more durable set might be a good option. Materials like metal and wood are the least brittle, but thicker, more durable china will also be harder to break than fine china or a delicate clay mug.

Pattern

Dish patterns have a long and storied history, with many people choosing a single family pattern that they then stick with. There are thousands of designs and teacup designs to choose from, from the more feminine floral designs to the simpler monochrome designs. Whether you prefer to mix up your designs or want a matching set, choose a design that matches your sense of style and your kitchen décor.

How much you can expect to spend on a teacup and saucer

There’s no shortage of inexpensive cup and saucer sets, and if you’re looking for a bargain, there are options as cheap as $5 or less per cup. But most high-quality teacup and saucer sets will cost between $20 and $50. Extremely high-end options can cost upwards of $100 or more for the set.

Teacups & Saucers FAQ

Are the teacups and saucers dishwasher and microwave safe?

A. Many modern tea sets are dishwasher safe, but unless specifically marked as such on the packaging, err on the side of caution. Many are also microwave safe, but any teacup or saucer with a metal foil as a design feature is not microwave safe. Hand washing all dishes, especially delicate ones, can prolong their life.

What is the best teacup shape?

A. It depends on your tea drinking preferences. Mugs with an angled edge may be easier to pour and drink, but retain heat less effectively. Straight brim designs, tall and short, will retain heat better and allow you to smell the aroma of tea, but may be harder to drink. Choose the style that goes best with your favorite tea.

With all the popular and addictive shows and movies that netflix has to offer, it’s easy to overlook the hidden quirks lurking within its depths. From bizarre documentaries to mind-blowing foreign films, there’s a whole world of weirdness just waiting to be discovered.

Netflix first gained popularity with its huge selection of TV shows and movies, but it also became known for its original content. If you’ve ever struggled to pull a stinger out from under the skin while your child squirms and squeals after a bee sting, you know how difficult it can be. Invented by mother-daughter duo Kelley Higney and Ellen McAlister in 2017, the Bug Bite Thing is a suction tool intended to remove irritants under the skin after an insect bite or sting, including saliva and venom which cause itching and swelling. The plastic tube shaped suction tube is lightweight, compact and reusable. At approximately 5 inches tall, it’s very simple to store in your pocket, purse, or bag.

Simply place the tool over the insect bite area and slowly pull the handle up to create the suction and wait 10-20 seconds for the irritants to be released from under the skin. As a mother living on the Texas coast with a son allergic to mosquitoes, I can personally say that this little tool really works. It reduces the size of bites and eliminates itching.

Exam: “I was a big skeptic; how could a little suction cure this painfully itchy allergic reaction? I will be honest. I still don’t really know how it works, but it provides instant relief that no pill, cream or injection has ever given me. If you live in a place where insect bites are common, you must own one!”

Kenzy Cheeseman, artist and fashion designer, makes botanical art prints using flowers from her father’s garden, and also designs and sews face masks. She lives in Hataitai, Wellington, with her partner Luis Perez, a chef.

KENZY CHEESMAN: We bought this townhouse about four and a half years ago. It was quite run down when we got it, with dirty yellow walls. We gutted it completely and painted the walls white. It is a really comfortable house in the winter and a sunbath in the summer. It’s so close to Hataitai town and beach for summer swimming.

I keep my bike indoors so I don’t forget to ride it, although I have to admit I find the roads in Wellington a bit terrifying.

When we moved in, I was running Bello, a housewares store, and a lot of our business came from there. It had been a long time since I finished my silk and merino loungewear brand, For Every Minute, which lasted for five years. I’ll be honest, I lost a bit of self-confidence after having to close a brand in which I had given myself body and soul.

My Bitossi glasses are quite valuable. They are color coded so when friends come over we get a color each so we don’t mix up our drinks.

The Tsé Tsé ceramic bowls and plates are bold with Uzbek patterns, and I’m drawn to their irregular shapes. Luis and I like to cook. When you manage to present the food on beautiful plates, it makes the dining experience much more interesting.

I wear a lot of black, but I prefer colored interiors. Color illuminates everything. We have a little orange in the house. It plays well against all our green things.

My parents bought the green dining table in 1975. It’s by Italian designer Vico Magistretti and they had it in their London flat. They’ve always had such a cool style – powder pink walls and mom made their black and white zigzag curtains.

When I was growing up in London, this was our dining table in our formal living room. We bought it with us when we moved to New Zealand in the 1990s. I always told my parents I wanted dibs on it. My parents have hosted amazing dinner parties around it over the years, and we loved entertaining around it too.

After closing the business and five years in retail, I missed making my own products. I had no job and no plan, but I was positive and open to opportunities.

It was then that I brought my old sewing machine upstairs, which had gathered dust. The day before [March 2020] lockdown I bought a lot of fabric from Spotlight and started making masks for family and friends, then it got crazy and our house turned into a production factory.

The sofa was originally in cream linen, but Cheeseman reclaimed it in orange fabric.

I received the sofa from a friend of my mother. It was a cream linen. I ordered the orange fabric and had a few weeks up my sleeve during one of our lockdowns, so I picked it up. I took a pattern from the old couch and made the new upholstery and cushions on my sewing machine.

Mom and Dad gave me Seraphine Pick’s artwork for my 21st birthday. It dates from the late 1990s. I’ve always loved it.

Last year, I spent a week tending to my father’s quarter-acre garden in Greytown. Dad is trained as a typographer and art director and he combines plants, colors and textures with such a wonderful eye. His garden is my happy place. I began handpicking and arranging flowers, leaves and pods he had grown and digitally captured them using the flatbed scanning process.

I was thinking of making textile designs out of it, but a friend asked me for one as a framed print, and that was it.

I find it fascinating to choose flowers like dahlias, canna lilies and yarrow and arrange them, step back and see the artworks unfold. It is also an opportunity to observe the evolution of flowers and plants over the seasons. I can’t wait for the hellebores to bloom in winter.

I am delighted to exhibit at the NZ Art Show [over Queen’s Birthday weekend]. This will be my very first exhibition.

My mother and my grandmother were both passionate about knitting, I don’t have the talent for that! In Wairarapa I met all these knitters and thought this would be a great way to profile and support them. I created Yarnly, a collaborative project that brings together a team of skilled artisans to knit, crochet and weave New Zealand woolen yarn into fashion items and accessories. I design the ideas and the knitters make them.

I keep my scarf on a mannequin in my workshop, in memory of Jan Daly, one of the knitters who passed away last year. Her yarn collection was donated to charity and our knitters did their magic and knitted the yarn into baby blankets.

The New Zealand Art Exhibition runs from June 3-5, the Queen’s Birthday weekend, at the TSB Arena in Wellington.

Among other things, May is an important month for two celebrations: celebrating Asian American heritage and spreading mental health awareness.

In the United States, Asia-Pacific American History Month (APAHM) and Mental Health Awareness Month are celebrated in May to continue the difficult but necessary conversations about these two pressing topics.

As anyone lucky today knows, the past two years have given the world enough grief, tragedy, loss and frustration to last a lifetime.

A recent CDC report on a survey of high school students found that 55.1% described experiencing emotional abuse, 44.2% reported lingering feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and 9% attempted suicide. Additionally, young women and girls as well as LGBTQ+ youth – of all racial backgrounds – are more likely to attempt suicide.

According to Angela Vasquez, director of mental health policy at the Children’s Partnership, about half of all children “who are severely disabled with a major depressive episode have not received” any form of mental health treatment.

Depression, like most mood disorders, thrives on stealth and concealment; the more you hide and avoid the problem, the bigger it gets.

Even though the coronavirus pandemic has seemed to make things like depression, anxiety and general mood disorders worse, these issues — along with an unwillingness to confront them — have always been pressing issues, though rarely resolved. within the community.

“It’s kind of funny that this is a month for Asian Americans and the normalization of mental health, because those two ideas are like oil and water – they don’t necessarily mix,” Ravi Villeno, a Filipino American who lives in San Diego, California, told the Asian Journal in a phone interview.

Villeno – who is also Sri Lankan – shared that within his family unit, communicating emotions never felt very safe due to the rather hostile manner of his parents. He said his parents explained his falling grades and overall unproductiveness as just laziness rather than taking the soft approach of talking calmly about it and seeking professional help.

But Villeno noted that the community, the affluent coastal town of Del Mar he grew up in, didn’t make it very conducive to healthy conversations about self-care, toxic modes of communication, boundaries and therapy.

And Villeno is far from the only Filipino American who has felt suffocated by a community that made it difficult to deal with mental health issues.

“Growing up in a fairly affluent region – which had many Asian families determined to uphold the myth of the model minority, including my own who was obsessed with flaunting a perfect image – did not create the right environment for express myself,” Jerianne said. Morales, a Filipino American.

Morales, 24, was born and raised in Tustin, Calif., and she knew from a young age that her parents worked tirelessly to present the image of a stable family with children who were doing exceptionally well in school. school – a desire not uncommon among Asian families in the United States

“Even though there were a lot of Asians and Filipinos around me, and even though there’s a sense of community in there, it never really felt like a space where I could be vulnerable and real,” said Morales, who earned a Masters degree. in social work and is working towards becoming a licensed clinical social worker.

She acknowledged that her parents, and many first- and second-generation immigrants, simply don’t have the vocabulary and tools to deal with conflict and difficult situations. Rather than having great, productive problem-solving conversations, they’ve turned to accusatory language and tone that will most likely make children feel alienated.

“Instead of punishingly yelling at your child, ‘why did you get a D on that assignment? You failed that assignment! I told you to study more! you can take a more measured approach, based on solutions, like, ‘Oh, I see you got a D for this assignment. What are you having trouble with and what do you think we can do to make sure you understand your class assignments?’, Morales suggested.

She added: “If your child isn’t doing well in school, it’s probably due to mental blocks, which of course doesn’t mean there’s anything inherently wrong with them. C is completely normal.

As previously mentioned in the Asian Journal, the Asian community is vast, a population and a diaspora that encompasses almost half of the planet. It’s a herculean task trying to aggregate information, trends, and philosophies for a community that encompasses hundreds of unique cultures, languages, religions, and traditions.

But in the United States, experts say families in the Asian American diaspora share similar sensitivities when it comes to parenting. The classic conflict between the traditionally Asian principles of collectivism and the American ideal of individualism remains present in Asian American parenting styles: impeccable grades in school mean entrance into a prestigious university, which leads to a successful career in, typically, medicine, law, or other fields. areas that promise not just financial security, but wealth.

But what happens when a child does not share these same values? The conflict that arises from these differences can be severe, but listening to and treating these problem-solving methods as collaboration can help.

“I think the more parents hide and demonize their emotions and neglect to listen to their children, the more damage they cause,” Phillip Solomon, a Filipino American social worker based in the Bay Area, told the Asian Journal.

He said, “Child psychology almost always begins with the parents.”

The way parents communicate with their children and the nuances of language they use have a lot more impact than parents realize, Solomon said. He added that punitive measures to ensure that a teenager does not face any perceived “bad” obstacles such as, for example, dating or partying only encourage rebellious behavior.

Opting for more concrete approaches and solution-based language can be the first step to improving parent-child relationships, which, of course, is key to maintaining a child’s mental and emotional stability.

“As a parent, patience can tend to wear thin pretty quickly, which can lead to unnecessary communication patterns,” Solomon said. “But at the end of the day, our kids are #1 in our lives as parents, and when we say we’d do anything for our kids, that includes appropriately and gently conducting productive conversations where we process our children, not as children, but as the adults they will become.
