Invest in index funds

Sausalito, California: Investing is both an art and a science. We use scientific tools to measure the probability of return distributions, analyze financial statements for data trends, and track economic models. But like artists, success depends on thinking creatively about the psychology of others, differentiating your style, and taking risks that science can’t fully explain. These facets of investing lead to a wide range of philosophies and only a few agreed-upon methods across the industry. Political risk, natural disasters and, more recently, viruses have proven many theories flawed. However, some old adage from icons like Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffet lives on on Wall Street. The most striking today is the timeless saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.

Professional investors agree that diversification is one of the keys to success, although the degree of diversification is still much debated – Graham proved that a portfolio of just 15-30 stocks was needed to get maximum diversification benefits nearly a century ago.[1] Curiously, active investors often benchmark, or compare, their returns to Standard & Poor’s 500 market-cap-weighted stocks (or the Global Basket for international investors). You could say it’s too much diversified, but even more curiously, the indices are concentrated in a few large and powerful technology companies. It’s hard to understand why one would compare these two types of portfolios: one where each slice is about 3% of the pie, while in the other some slices are 7% and other slices are 0.01%. The contrast between these two styles is clear.

The scope of the market is studied and antitrust is debated, but what does all this mean for individuals today? Diversification, the only universal risk management tool in our industry, has now become opaque. 16% of the MSCI World Index is made up of Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (Google), Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: FB) (Facebook), Amazon.com, Inc. ( NASDAQ: AMZN) and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA). 24% of the S&P 500 is made up of these names. The contribution of the performance of these companies to the overall return of the index is surprisingly positive, but it can change quickly. Yes, many of them have ample liquidity and high quality income. Yes, this accurately represents the largest sector of the US economy and the company has proven that very little will inhibit demand for these companies’ products and services. But will investors let this concentration trend continue and be lulled into forgetting the agreed-upon diversification rule? The return contribution can also be very negative, so we hope not.

Passive biases

Many blame the proliferation of passive investing, the explosion of mutual funds, and booming ETF business for the current situation. Indeed, every two weeks, when the bulk of Americans receive a paycheck, a significant percentage is passively invested in these same indices – funneling the most funds to the biggest holdings and reinforcing a cycle. Even professional investors have pessimistic biases towards these familiar and successful companies. The current concentration of technology companies is the deepest in history, but with the belief that the market is not perfectly efficient and a world obsessed with data, we believe that active investors can still profoundly put the market back on track. rails.

The speed at which things are changing historically is particularly reassuring. Just 13 years ago, some of the biggest companies in the S&P 500 were Exxon, Citigroup, AT&T and Walmart. These companies have all been deeply affected by the themes of previous decades: we have dethroned the energy giants, restructured the financial system with Dodd-Frank and other post-financial crisis regulations, viewed smartphones as a mode of life and business necessity, and empowered small businesses online. . So when we look at today’s themes, we wonder if the kings and queens of the S&P will continue to reign in 2035. What would an artist or entrepreneur do to address growing consumer privacy concerns? Or a desire to work remotely forever? What about global warming or the impending threat from China? These are only the themes apparent today, but there are surely others, invisible to us now.

The current situation as well as the historic priority for change makes us grateful to be active, individual investors in equities. Index strategies could face significant pressure in the years to come, especially as we are at the most consolidated point in history. The illusions of diversification in today’s indices are real, and investors would do well to remember the idea we all agreed on, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.

Preview 11 of Microsoft’s .NET MAUI (Multi-platform App UI), a cross-platform development framework for building native mobile and desktop apps, has arrived, bringing preliminary UI style support Windows 11 and support for multi-window applications.

An evolution of Xamarin.Forms, .NET MAUI enables .NET developers to build native apps for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows with C# and XAML. The latest preview, which was unveiled on January 5, runs on the latest .NET preview and is available with Visual Studio 2022 17.1 Preview 2 on Windows.

To support Windows 11’s UI style based on the Fluent Design system, Preview 11 includes updates to MAUI’s Button, Entry, and Editor controls. Windows 11 includes updated Fluent and .NET MAUI style controls to use the latest version.

Also featured in .NET MAUI Preview 11 is the introduction of multi-window support in applications, a major upgrade over Xamarin.Forms. Application.Current.Windows contains references to all created windows. The multi-window Windows App SDK implementation will be in an experimental version for now.

Meanwhile, the patterns have been updated to use C#10 patterns such as implicit uses and file-deleted namespaces. Item templates have been added for ContentPage and ContentView.

Balmain and Barbie recently collaborated on a collection that includes three NFTs, as well as physical products. Barbie’s parent company Mattel has previously worked with Gucci on a set of limited-edition Hot Wheels physical cars. But are luxury fashion toys in the Metaverse the future of collectibles?

The craze for fashion toys is nothing new. For example, the collector’s item from the Japanese brand Medicom Bearbrick the toys, launched in 2001, took over the brand identity of 10 different designers in 2014. They included Kenzo, Lanvin, Carven, Undercover, Marni, Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne and White Mountaineering. Collectibles now sell for up to $ 2,500 on platforms like Action X. As brands become more comfortable in the NFT space, some are seeing the similarities between the physical collector’s space and the unique digital works of art created for the Metaverse.

“Connecting to culture is a central part of Mattel’s Playbook, and Barbie is a globally recognized fashion and pop culture icon, which creates an interesting intersection between brand, art and collection,” said said Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel. . “Through Barbie’s collaboration with Balmain, we harness the power of our mutually innovative heritage to invite all fans to experience the art, fashion and culture that both brands offer, in a unique way.”

Last week, fashion label Balmain announced a limited collection of physical Balmain clothing styles and accessories the size of a Barbie., a collection of 50 pieces of ready-to-wear and accessories for women, and three unique NFTs from Barbie and Ken. The NFTs will be on sale this week on Mint NFT, a premium NFT marketplace. From the Mattel Creations collector’s platform, the toys function like blank slates on which outside artists can display their work, much like Bearbricks exhibits the work of collaborating artists.

The nostalgic RTW collection echoes the Balmain brand identity and incorporates classic Barbie designs. The ’90s Barbie logo from the packaging and the iconic Pantone hue “Barbie pink” are featured along with Balmain’s signature striped sweater and Labyrinth designs on oversized Balmain capes, bags and kimonos. The 50-piece Barbie x Balmain line of ready-to-wear and accessories will be available for sale in Balmain boutiques, on balmain.com and on the Mattel Creations online store from January 13.

Oliver Rousteing, Creative Director of Balmain, said in the press release: “This collection rejects any arbitrary limitations of the genre – it is an almost 100% unisex collection. Today’s Barbie does [it] clear that there is nothing more holding us back! The Barbie doll’s legacy look makes it more than a one-off collaboration, pushing a historic toy into the digital realm.

Mattel clearly sees the opportunity in digital collectibles. Dickson believes that, “through proven partnerships like this, toys will become just as important as other fashion accessories to fashion brands and ignite a whole new audience and a whole new business of the future.” It is the pioneer in the space, having launched three NFT collections in its range of brands since last year.

His first NFT collection of three unique NFTs from the Hot Wheels NFT Garage series was released in June 2021. Next is an NFT Uno card. collaboration with VeeFriends created by Gary Vaynerchuk. Surprisingly, other toy makers didn’t venture into the NFT space; Mattel was the first to make the connection between the commercial success of its products and the growing community of NFT creators and buyers.

“We see the collectors space as being ready for innovation, and fashion and toys together are going to be a whole new activity. The pandemic has shown us that the human need to ‘play’ at any age is very real, and we are not seeing that abate, ”Dickson said. “The passion for our brands has always been unique, ageless, which gives us a clue to present our brands in fun and reinvented ways for adult fans. As luxury fashion brands test the field of NFTs, collectible toys could serve as a way to join traditional brands across industries to generate renewed interest and attention.

Both the Hot Wheels NFT Collection and the Balmain x Barbie NFT Collection have been auctioned on proof of stake blockchain systems, making them less power hungry. The latter used Flow, which previously hosted Crypto Kitties and NBA NFTs. Some in the fashion space have remained hesitant to get involved in notoriously power-hungry NFTs, as the industry has become so focused on sustainability. The more industry leaders focus on proof of stake mechanisms for NFT and blockchain projects, the less reluctance brands will be to immerse themselves in the space.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. When we look at charts or go to the market for trading ideas, thousands of pieces of information compete for our attention. In this article, I’ll share an overview of some of the key technical factors that I take into account when making a transaction. I think they are the most important items on a chart.

The problem is, most of the information is, frankly, unnecessary. Much of the information overlaps and most of it will not move the markets as people expect. Unless we can focus our attention on the things that really have the power to shape the future course of prices, we are doomed to eventual failure.

Here are four things that help sort out the right potential business candidates from markets that should be avoided.

  • Presence or absence of a longer term trend
  • Short-term volatility versus long-term volatility
  • All real support and resistance levels nearby
  • Significant short-term models

Let’s look at these one at a time:

Longer term trend

The presence or absence of a trend is clearly one of the most important factors in financial markets. We are not suggesting a naïve ‘follow the trend’ approach, but knowing whether there is a trend or not will help you avoid markets that spin at random. Knowing whether you are trading in alignment or against an existing trend has important implications for the management of the trade.

Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to identify trending and non-trending markets! We can look at a chart over a longer period of time, but we can also just look at a chart and notice if the prices are going up or down, or if they are relatively stable. Here is a market with a good uptrend:

Here’s a relatively flat market that would likely offer frustrating trading for most styles:

Recent volatility in context

Volatility is just a number. This in and of itself doesn’t tell us much, but knowing whether a market has become more or less volatile recently can give us significant insight into what is to come. To a very real extent, any trade is a forecast of future volatility conditions. Here is an example of a market that has recently become much more volatile:

And here’s a market where recent volatility could dry up:

Trading this aspect of a market is not necessarily straightforward, but understanding what is likely to happen to volatility in the near future can give us some clues as to. How? ‘Or’ What this market can move – certain conditions can give us an advantage for clear moves, for prolonged moves, or sometimes tilt in favor of failure.

And here’s another nugget: A rapid change in volatility, such as new momentum from a consolidation, has a quantifiable benefit for the pursuit.

Support and resistance

I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion with much of the social media trading world, but my trading experience and quantitative testing led me to a firm conclusion: support and resistance. just don’t work the way people think. Most of the levels where people expect support and resistance don’t make sense, and you can’t trust your subjective sense of what works.

However, some levels are real and powerful. A short list of the levels we pay special attention to:

  • Highs / lows of all time
  • Annual highs / lows
  • Visible and obvious points of the graph
  • Our power levels

The action around these levels can often be revealing, and some of them (eg, 52 week highs) have clearly quantifiable trends. (Note that there are follow-up trades here as well, as some of them tend back and forth, depending on how long they’ve been hit.) When we see a market continually hitting all-time highs, it does tells us something:

Short-term models

These can be complicated as this is where everyone wants to start. The most recent traders say (quite reasonably), “Just show me patterns that tell me where the market is going to go!” The problem is, these models are more meaningful when placed in context, and each has its time and place.

Here is a list of some of the models that we find significant. Some of them cover 2-3 bars, and some are a bit bigger:

  • Flags or consolidations
  • Nested flags
  • Rapid climax of the ‘up / down’ trend
  • Antis
  • Our standard trend termination models
  • Small patterns such as NR7, ID / NR5, etc.

How to use these

The next time you look at a chart, try using this frame. It takes time and experience (for example, to understand short-term trends or inflections in volatility), but working on a quick checklist like this can probably add to what you’re already doing, and can even show you new directions for profitability.

If you’ve got seven minutes to spare and you’re looking for some deeply meaningful insight into parenting, do yourself a favor and watch Disney’s new short. Far from the tree. The seven-minute short premiered before the Disney feature film Encanto, and a bit like Encanto himself, Far from the tree manages to deepen certain difficult family dynamics. Without saying a single word.

Far from the tree Immerse yourself in the fears and protection of parents

Far from the tree Designer Natalie Nourigat took a look at different styles of parenting and what it feels like to break harmful cycles. Set in the Pacific Northwest, the animated short sees a young raccoon following an adult raccoon who is presumably its parent to a beach just beyond the forest. The curious little raccoon wants to explore the beach but the adult, who is missing one eye and still frowning, does not allow it. Clearly scared of what might happen to the little raccoon, but that protection translates into anger. As the little raccoon tries to play with puffins, search for clams, and listen to the waves inside a seashell, they are pushed back into a cave over and over again. The viewer understands why when the little raccoon crosses a coyote and is injured before being rescued.

And what it feels like to break harmful cycles …

This raccoon is coming of age with its own baby, and we see the cycle of protection continue. Until they realize that they are scaring the little raccoon and eventually learning how to keep it safe by showing them the coyote and allowing them to help them under their watchful eye. Far from the tree is a moving description of how a parent’s fear can affect their child and what it looks like when that child learns to break the cycle by living with fear instead of allowing him to overcome it.

The short film is based on Nourigat’s reflection on parenthood and his own observations. “It was based on something really personal – growing up in Oregon, going to the beach with my family and how special it was to all be together. I’m in my mid-thirties and wonder if I’ll ever bring a little person to the beach… I’m just thinking about parenthood and the complexity of it, ”Nourigat told NPR. “Seeing some of my friends go through this and their struggles with what do they want to repeat? What don’t they want to repeat? And to realize, when they get there, how difficult it is and to understand a little more what their parents have been able to live with them.

How to watch Far from the tree

“Far From The Tree” is a nice Disney short film.

Far from the tree is available as a standalone short for streaming on Disney +, or it can be seen in theaters early in Encanto.

Both Encanto and Far from the tree look at family dynamics from a new perspective. The Disney short is all about trying to relearn old patterns, accepting danger as part of your parenting life, and finding a better path if the one you experienced as a child left you with scars. Raccoons. Apparently they have learned the secret.

Jan 03, 2022

In November, Nike broke member engagement records with the launch of its first globally coordinated Member Days event. The event, launched in 2019, offers loyalty members privileged access, offers and rewards over five themed days.

“From exclusive member product offers to our first member events streamed live from our Nike Town London and Passeig de Gracia Store in Barcelona, we’ve created a distinct member experience and set a record for weekly active users on the Nike App in North America, ”Matthew Friend, Nike EVP and CFO, said in the company’s second quarter call to investors last month.

The US event in November included:

  • November 9 – Member exclusive running shoes and clothing: Exclusive access to new cold weather running clothes as well as the re-release of the 1979 running shoe, Daybreak, updated in retro colors.
  • November 10 – PeacePlayers Celebration: Members earned a badge of achievement in the Nike Run Club app by running a 5K or participating in other outreach activities for PeacePlayers, an organization that uses basketball to unite young people in divided communities.
  • November 11 – Save up to 50% on select styles: A flash sale offered discounts of up to 50% on various styles.
  • November 12 – Nike By You Kyrie 7 Exclusive: Members had the chance to customize the new Kyrie 7 shoe style with Nike By You.
  • November 13 – Air Force 1 exclusive: Members got access to the latest Air Force 1 in World Kindness Day inspired colors.

Nike attributes its strong member engagement to the options it gives customers to connect digitally. Forty percent of Nike this year’s online sales came from the brand’s mobile apps.

“Not all brands in our industry or other industries are able to have this direct connection to consumers,” said John Donahoe, president and CEO of Nike. “That’s why we’re so focused on our full funnel, bringing new members to the top of the funnel, engaging the middle of the funnel and, of course, translating that into strong, deep relationships. “

Most of the member events of other retailers appear to be largely sales-related, including Amazon Prime Day, early access to major sales events such as the Nordstrom Semi-Annual Sale, and Friends and Family Days of Macy’s, Gap and others.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Would an extended days program similar to Nike member days work for other retailers? What can other Nike retailers and brands learn about digital member engagement?

  • Despite a slightly different size, the Apple Watch Series 7 is still compatible with bracelets made for previous generations.
  • However, not all chargers and bumper cases are fully compatible with the latest version.
  • With Apple Watch 7 poised to become a holiday favorite, here are some accessories worth paying for.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is here with a redesigned screen. Apple’s latest smartwatch has more rounded corners, the largest screen area to date, and stronger glass. Despite the slightly different size, the Series 7 watch is still compatible with previous straps. That hasn’t stopped the onslaught of new Apple Watch Series 7 accessories, however. As with previous models, users will need to make sure to match the strap to the size of the watch: 45mm or 41mm.

Apple’s common third-party brand partners have a slew of updated styles to coincide with the updated watch. Apple watch bands are seeing new colors while several brands have entirely new styles.

Although the bracelets are compatible, Apple Watch Series 7 comes with an updated charger. The charger retains the same wireless magnetic design, but the opposite end now uses

. This change is part of what allows the Series 7 to charge faster, so owners of Apple’s latest Watch will want to ensure charger compatibility for the highest speed.

And, while the straps are compatible, the cases that wrap around the screen may not fit designs from some brands. Apple says the size changes are minimal, but some third-party case makers have listed their previously released cases as incompatible with the 7-Series. The different sizes mean not all bumpers will fit.

Here are some of the coolest Apple Watch Series 7 accessories to check out in stores.
