Gold House’s inaugural Golden Gala celebrated the A100 List with a gathering of API leaders
On historic St. Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles, Gold House, in partnership with Meta, hosted its first Gold Gala, an evening to celebrate the 2022 A100 List, which honors Asian and Pacific Islander personalities most influential people of the past year, including celebrities, cultural leaders, politicians and business executives. Such an event warranted an impressive guest list of over 500, including Mindy Kaling, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Daniel Dae Kim, Ashley Park, Chloe Kim, and more.
Founded by Bing Chen in 2017, Gold House is a nonprofit collective of changemakers – founders, artists, and leaders – aiming to unify the API community and champion greater representation and socio-economic equity. Chen himself led the evening’s program, beginning with a moving speech that ended with a round of applause.
Uniquely, as most galas tend to dive headfirst into monologues and dinner parties, Chen kicked off the evening with an interactive game he called Give and Get, which encouraged the powerful inhabitants of the venue to share their resources: one guest request was to receive a book agreement to write about the Gold House initiative; another, screenwriting mentorship; another, more support for young trans APIs.
The evening’s theme, “The New Gold Age”, introduced a dress code inspired by modern Asian couture. Embellishments, bling, embroidery, and general excessiveness were all fair game. Fittingly, the fashion designers on the guest list even dressed up a few of the attendees: Lisa Wu, Yeoh and others arrived at Prabal Gurung while Taylor Rapp wore a custom tang-style Phillip Lim suit.
Throughout the gala, guests floated back and forth, and an open ice bar hosted by Hennessy XO towered overhead. All the while, everyone enjoyed a Spotify playlist highlighting API Music artists between award acceptances and enthusiastic discussions.
High energy and chatter buzzed all around; participants were congratulating each other, catching up or meeting for the first time. During Give and Get, Gurung’s joking request was for the back of the room to be quiet, but the quietest moments came when the night’s winners, Yeoh and Kaling, took the stage with heartfelt anecdotes .
Then, prepared with craft drinks, light appetizers from Panda Restaurant Group, custom boba drinks and an eagerness to keep the celebration going, the after-party began.
