Model criticizes fashion industry for encouraging unhealthy size expectations

A New York-based TikToker and model Anna Gantt, 22, went viral after posting a TikTok where she criticized the fashion industry for its unhealthy size expectations.

In the video, which has racked up 14.5 million views since it was uploaded on October 21, Gantt broke down in tears and said she was injured by a producer and casting director who asked her to lose some weight.

For context, Gantt explains that she has been modeling since 2014, when she was a teenager. Since then, she has said she gained 35 pounds and went from a size 0/2 to a size 4/6.

“I’m boring everyday because I’m not a skeleton, and I’m not unhealthy anymore,” she said.

She continued, “I see on TikTok that everyone wants to be fashionable, everyone wants to be a model. I’m 5’10”, I’m in good health, I have suffered from an feeding for years, and I finally feel confident in my size.

Gantt did not reveal the name of the agency that asked her to lose weight, but apparently the casting director and producer said she needed it because they wanted to “see her bones.”

“Living in this city will make you feel like shit on yourself, and it will make you feel like you are not enough and it will make you feel like you have to live an unhealthy lifestyle to get there,” said Gantt.

The model concludes by saying that she is “done” with the industry.

Gantt’s video has over 14 million views. Many people, including other models, also shared their support for Gantt.

“Eff them. You are gorgeous, ”model Tess Holliday wrote. “The industry has to change, you don’t. “

“It’s heartbreaking,” wrote the TikTok account for Council of Fashion Designers of America. “You are beautiful.”

The Daily Dot reached out to Gantt via a TikTok comment.
