Volkswagen is No. 1 in electric vehicle sales in these 10 European countries

I just published a report on the 30 best-selling electric cars and SUVs in 10 European countries. Model races and leaderboards are always fun, but there is more to explore and compare than just models. As we all know by now, some companies have focused on a small number of models (sometimes out of necessity), while others have rolled out a larger number of models and spread the electrons across styles, sizes and tastes. .

Looking in the same 10 European countries as before – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland – the undisputed leader of the brand is Volkswagen, with 18.3% of sales pure electric vehicles in these countries. 10 markets. That’s almost one in five electric vehicles sold in these 10 countries.

Tesla, still driven by the best-selling Model 3, is No. 2, holding 10% of electric vehicle sales. Renault is not far behind, with a 9.2% share of the electric vehicle market, but expects Tesla to increase its lead especially in June, and probably even further until the end of 2021.

Peugeot (7.7%) and Hyundai (6%) complete the top 5.

Hyundai’s criminal partner Kia comes just behind Hyundai in 6th place, which raises another question. You can look beyond brands and also look at the results of automotive groups and alliances. I’ll get to that in a minute, after looking at the brand’s most recent statistics in these markets – May sales.

When you look only at EV sales in May, there isn’t much change from the January-May sales rank. However, Škoda jumps from # 10 to # 4 on the back of the very popular Škoda Enyaq. Also, Kia and Hyundai, which are very tight, change places. In addition, Opel climbs from 9th to 8th, Smart goes from 7th to 9th and Fiat climbs from 12th to 10th to close the top 10.

Overall, it seems likely that Volkswagen will end the year at No.1, Tesla at No.2, and Renault at No.3 – but we’ll see and make sure to report if other brands sprint to. a medal.

Now let’s look at the confusing auto groups, alliances and conglomerate partnerships.

Obviously, the Volkswagen Group is currently the king of electric vehicle sales in Europe. And you have to wonder how long it will take before he is dethroned. It could be long, long.

Will Tesla Giga Berlin be able to put Tesla back on top once it releases German-made electric cars? We’ll see, but it’s still a long way off. In the meantime, if a European buys an electric vehicle, he is most likely buying something from the Volkswagen team.

Big props are also due for Stellantis, which quickly climbed the EV sales ladder to second place. I remember when Maarten Vinkhuyzen predicted great things from PSA (the core of Stellantis) a few years ago and was a little skeptical, but open-minded because it came from Maarten (whom I trust as much as anyone regarding market commentary and analysis). Indeed, he was right, PSA came strong. Moreover, Fiat woke up and delivered quite a few units of its cute little 500th.

There is actually a way for the Volkswagen Group to be dethroned overnight – if Tesla joins Stellantis. Teslantis? (Of course, this is just a joke, because it’s not even possible from a distance.)

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and the Hyundai-Kia partnership continue their semi-leadership in electric vehicle sales at number two, followed for now by the premium class trio of Tesla, Daimler and BMW. Tesla is sure to climb the rankings for the first half of the year, however, when June sales roll in. This is, after all, one of its best 4 months of sales of the year, due to Tesla’s shipping models still favoring month of the quarter.
